Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit has rocked the royal family like never before, yet Prince Charles and Prince William have reportedly learned a valuable lesson from Megxit. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their departure from the monarchy at the beginning of January. While the royals are doing everything in their power to pick up the pieces, experts believe that Prince Charles and Prince William have started to be more affectionate in public – a lesson they learned from Harry and Meghan
Prince Charles and Prince William join forces
Charles and William recently enjoyed a rare public appearance together alongside their respective wives, Camilla Parker Bowles and Kate Middleton.
The couples teamed up to visit the Defense Medical Rehabilitation Center (DMRC), which is located in Loughborough. The royals mingled with military men and women at the hospital, and cameras were on hand to catch a playful interaction between Prince Charles and his son.

Sixth time lucky 🏀 The Duke of Cambridge scores in Wheelchair Basketball (with a little help from The Prince of Wales!) during a visit to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre today. Together with The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge, they met patients and staff at DMRC Stanford Hall, which rehabilitates some of the most seriously injured members of the Armed Forces, whilst also helping to return those who have been injured in the course of training to work. It’s not all about physical rehabilitation though — supporting the mental health of patients is also a key part of the recovery process, with several patients at centre using gardening as a form of therapy, and in the workshop woodworking and other practical skills helped people gain more confidence and learn new skills.
The video in question shows Charles pushing William in a wheelchair as the Duke of Cambridge gets ready to shoot a basketball. After William fails to make a few shots, Charles is shown rubbing William’s shoulder in an obvious sign of affection.
The interaction between Prince Charles and Prince William might seem normal to most parents, but it is out of the ordinary for the royals. Most members of the royal family, including Charles and William, rarely show affection in public.
But based on the clip, it appears as though things are beginning to change on that front.
Prince Charles learned from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Over the past two years, Harry and Meghan were not afraid to show a bit of affection in public. This usually took the form of physical contact, like a loving hand on the shoulder or a quick embrace, which is well beyond what most royals show in public settings.
According to Express, experts believe that the affection Prince Charles and Prince William showed at the recent engagement indicates that the royals are embracing this more “relatable” approach.
“You don’t see them very often as touchy-feely as they were then. Have we ever seen that before?”
royal commentator Phillip Schofield asked.

This evening, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended #TheLionKing European premiere in London at the Odeon Theatre. In celebration of the film’s release, The Walt Disney Company announced #ProtectThePride, a global conservation campaign to support efforts protecting the rapidly diminishing lion population across Africa. As a part of their commitment to this cause, Disney also made a donation to The Duke of Sussex’s upcoming environment & community initiative which will be formally announced this autumn. The Duke and Duchess are committed to advancing conservation efforts across Africa and around the world, and working with communities to ensure a sustainable future for the planet. This evening Their Royal Highnesses had the pleasure of meeting the cast and creative team behind the film, as well as supporters of @africanparksnetwork, of which The Duke is President. There is no telling if Prince William and Prince Charles are acting on something they learned from Harry and Meghan. But it is clear that the royals are putting on a united front in the wake of Megxit.
The monarchy took a big hit over Prince Harry and Meghan’s exit. The royals will probably be repairing their public image for years to come, and showing more affection towards each other is a step in the right direction.
The royals recover following Harry and Meghan’s exit
Prior to their announcement in January, Harry and Meghan were fully expected to return to their royal duties in 2020. But now that they are no longer senior members of the royal family, the amount of royal engagements they will attend this year has significantly dropped.
To make things even worse, Prince Andrew was forced to step away from his royal duties last fall. Andrew went into hiding following his sex scandal and controversial ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Today The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, together with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, to meet patients and staff. Facilities at the centre includes gyms, swimming and hydrotherapy pools, alongside social spaces and places for relaxation. The royals have also been stretched thin because of Prince Philip’s retirement a few years ago. With Harry and Meghan no longer performing royal duties, the high ranking members of the royal family are feeling the pressure like never before.
Amid all the drama, William and Kate enjoyed a rare public appearance with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. The couples visited a military hospital in what was a clear display of unity for the family.
Which members of the royal family will step up?
Aside from William and Kate, there has been a lot of talk about which members of the royal family will step up to the plate.
The royals have not made any official announcement, but Queen Elizabeth is reportedly looking to promote Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Her Majesty is also allegedly planning on giving one of Harry’s titles to Princess Anne, though we’ll have to wait and see how that pans out.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA
Prince Charles and Prince William have not commented on the reports surrounding Harry and Meghan’s exit. It is unclear how many joint appearances they have lined up for 2020, but hopefully, we’ll see more interactions between the two in the coming months.
