The 2020 C8 Corvette’s Frunk Acts As Speed Limiter

With the front trunk unlatched, the C8 won’t go faster than 82 mph (132 kph)

As you know, the 2020 C8 Corvette has two cargo storage compartments: one in the rear, although it has nothing to do with a traditional trunk and one in front, hidden under the hood, like we see on most mid-engine supercars/sports-cars out there.

And here comes the juicy stuff. According to GM Authority, some new 2020 Corvette owners discovered that when the front hood is unlatched, the Vette’s instrument cluster pops up a message saying “Hood Open 82 MPH Top Speed.”

For some reason, the car’s electronic brain decides to limit top speed at this specific value, although in all fairness, it’s still quite high to drive around with the hood unsecured.

Obviously, GM clearly specifies in the C8 owner manual that you shouldn’t drive with the front hood unlatched period, regardless at what speed:

Do not drive the vehicle if the hood is not latched completely. The hood could open fully, block your vision, and cause a crash. You or others could be injured. Always close the hood completely before driving.

Well, we guess this is pretty much common sense, actually, although we acknowledge that some might be tempted to ignore such recommendation as they look to enjoy the C8 Corvette’s 6.2-liter, 490-horsepower, 465-pound-feet LT2 V-8.

But seriously now, don’t do it. Just stay safe out there and just don’t drive around with the frunk lid unlatched.
